Flying is getting much easier and cheaper especially for early bookings. There are 4 airports:

La Rochelle , (1 hour away) , (www.larochelle.aeroport.fr ) is used by Ryanair, Flybe, and Easyjet.
Car hire is at the airport and is cheaper if you book with your flight

Poitiers , (1 hour 15 mins away), is smaller and is used by Ryanair from Stanstead.

Limoges (1 hour 50 mins away),used by Ryanair & easyjet

Angouleme (45 mins away) used byRyanair

Bordeaux is a big international airport , its about 2 hours away and all the main airlines use it.

The roads and motorways are very well maintained and the drive down from the ferry ports can be quite pleasurable. For full directions we recommend using the AA or RAC routeplanner.

St Malo is the nearest Port being just 4 hours 15 mins away. You can get there from Portsmouth, Poole & Weymouth. Brittany Ferries are the main service.
The high speed ferry Condor, runs from Weymouth and Poole to St Malo and also to Cherbourg (about 6 hours 30 mins away) but only in the summer.
Caen is the next, at around 6 hours. Again Brittany ferries do most of the trips.

The Tunnel is very popular because they leave every 30 mins. The drive in France is via Paris and takes about 7 hours 30 mins

LONDON to ANGOULEME, you can change either in Paris or Lille

Travel time is around 5 hours 45 mins

Angouleme is an easy 45 minute drive, car hire is available at the station
